Discover the joy of sailing at West River Sailing School’s summer program for kids ages 8-18. Located in a serene, traffic-free area, our school offers a safe and picturesque environment perfect for learning to sail.
Since 1954, we have been dedicated to teaching kids the art of sailing. Our holistic program focuses on sailing techniques while fostering a love for the water, teamwork, and personal growth. Experienced instructors guide students through hands-on activities that build confidence and competence. From boat handling to wind patterns and navigation, our curriculum caters to all skill levels.
Learning is enhanced through creative methods like Adventure Sails, Treasure Hunts, stormy day Jeopardy games, and more. Each session ends with a special activity, such as sailing to High Island for lunch or a picnic at Round Bay to observe hatching horseshoe crabs.
Safety is our top priority, and we provide a supportive environment where young sailors can thrive. Our structured, progressive learning opportunities ensure that each participant can advance at their own pace.

SEA URCHINS (4.5-8)
The Sea Urchin program is tailored for children aged 4.5 to 8, providing a welcoming introduction to the world of sailing. Our primary goal is to make sure that our young sailors feel comfortable on the water. They will learn in a playful environment that fosters confidence and enjoyment through arts and crafts, games, and time on the water. They will also start to learn the parts of the boat and other essential vocabulary, hopefully setting the stage for a lifetime of sailing adventures.
SAILING SCHOOL (7-18)
These courses cater to sailors of all skill levels who have completed second grade. Each two-week session is designed to cover the appropriate skills for each student's level, with continuous skill development for those returning for additional sessions. We utilize OPTIs, 420s, and Lasers in our program. If you require a one-week or special programming, please contact the director.
RACE TEAM
The Race Team is a natural progression for sailors comfortable with basic boat handling skills and eager to learn more about sailing and competing. They will practice advanced boat handling techniques, starting strategies, and mark-roundings, while also learning tactics, strategy, and racing rules. The team competes at various regattas around the Chesapeake Bay, with participants required to attend at least one session. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to experience racing if they have the competitive desire. Therefore, registration fees include the charter of a boat, sail(s), and dolly; however, personally owned sails and/or boats are encouraged for serious racers. Additionally, we offer the option for visiting sailors looking for single regatta coaching.
