The WRSC Jr. Racing Team is developed throughout the summer, based on experience and desire, and follows the Junior Sailing School Schedule. Racers can participate for a full season or just part. They don’t have to start out as racers—anyone with the desire will be given a chance to see what racing is all about.

Coached by our Racing Instructors, our Race Team is a natural step for junior sailors who have typically progressed through two or more sessions (a guideline, not a requirement), are comfortable with all aspects of boat handling, and have a passion for learning more about sailing and competing. Racers will practice boat handling skills, starting techniques, and mark-roundings, while also learning tactics, strategy, racing rules, and more. They remain part of the Junior Sailing School and won’t miss out on the fun.

The team competes at various regattas around the Chesapeake Bay and beyond as their skills and competition level grow. Racing Team participants are required to attend at least one three-week session. It is strongly recommended, although not required, that all racers participate in the very successful Race Session A during the first three weeks of camp, which provides a perfect start to the summer season and culminates with the Annapolis Jr. Race Week that starts off with our home regatta. Race Session C, includes racing at BCSC, GIYS, and the MD State Championships at RHYC, while Race Session C is an ideal way to enjoy the season's grand finale with races at MRYC and the fan-favorite Oxford annual regatta, making for a great family weekend and season-ending event.

Registration fees include the charter of a boat, sail(s), and dolly. Sailors will be assigned their own equipment on Day 1 of their session and taught how to care for it properly. Personal boats are encouraged for more serious racers. For those seeking a competitive edge without the costs of owning a boat, purchasing a set of sails might be beneficial.

Racing opportunities are available throughout the summer around the Chesapeake Bay area and beyond—see the racing schedule below. Session fees include coaching for all weekday regattas and the Oxford Annual Regatta within the session they are registered for. Regatta entry fees and other costs for road trips are additional. Parent volunteers for transportation of sailors and boats (including coach boats) are essential. Please note that weekend regattas and/or those requiring overnight stays (other than the Oxford Annual) will have extra fees for coaching, transportation, and hotel costs, shared evenly among participating sailors.

WRSC Jr. Race Team sessions align with the racing schedule to optimize training and regatta time. If the sessions do not fit your summer calendar or you have non-racing siblings to consider, please contact the Director for a personalized plan. Although not ideal, you also have the option to sign up for any regular summer sailing school session and choose 'racer' during registration.

Please note:

• Those wishing to participate in a particular regatta but are not signed up for the concurrent session may sign up for individual regatta coaching for a fee. Charter boats are also available for a fee, depending on availability.

• 420, ILCA, & 29ers ONLY: We believe in giving back to the sport, as much can be gained from teaching and sharing one's passion for sailing. Therefore, our older sailors in Race Session C and the full summer program participate in a group learning activity designed specifically for week 7. If you are unfamiliar with our group Sea Urchin program, please contact the Director for more information and qualifications. Race Session C requires that you have signed up for another session as well.
